The weather department has predicted heavy rain in several parts especially coastal and interior regions of Odisha today
The rains are believed to be a precursor to a low pressure area which is likely to be formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and the neighbourhood by July 23.
As per IMD, a low pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and the neighbourhood around July 23, 2021.
It seems the cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay will remain less marked and unlikely to develop to a low-pressure centre by Jul 23
Even as the south-west monsoon has been subdued over Odisha, the State has been receiving light to moderate rain and thundershowers for the past couple of days, said IMD.
Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Kalahandi, Keonjhar, Kandhamal, Deogarh in the next 24 hours.
As per IMD, a cyclonic circulation lies over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and the neighbourhood. A low pressure area is likely to form over Northwest Bay of Bengal and the neighbourhood around July 21, 2021.
The sea conditions reveal that while the SST will hover over 30 deg C, the VWS will remain moderate in the range of 10-12.5 knots
Light to moderate rain/ thundershower has occurred at many places over South Coastal Odisha in the past 24 hours.
As a low-pressure area will extend over Odisha by July 22-23, the major prediction is State will record lightning activity in more than 9 districts on July 19 at around the same hour
As many as 18 goats were also killed in the lightning incident
Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Gajapati and Ganjam in the next 24 hours
The State as a whole recorded 17 % deficiency in rainfall during the month of June.
According to the second annual lightning report 2021, thunderbolt strikes on Odisha has increased by around 37 per cent during the year 2020-21. The ominous fact is over 40 per cent of strikes are cloud to ground in Odisha and Gujarat- the highest in country
Due to inclement weather and heavy rains, all incoming flights to Dharamshala airport at Gaggal have been cancelled.
