Kunduli gang rape survivor commits suicide

Koraput: In a shocking turn of events, the Kunduli gang rape survivor allegedly committed suicide here on Monday.

According to reports, she committed suicide by hanging herself inside her house at around 2: 30 pm. Sunabeda SDPO Narahari Nayak informed that the girl was rescued in a critical condition and was rushed to Kunduli hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The survivor had brought rape charges against four security personnel posted in the region on October 10, 2017.

The incident had triggered state-wide outrage following which police and Crime Branch probe was ordered.

Later, HRPC stated that there was no truth to the allegations made by the survivor. Moreover, police also denied any evidence of gang rape. However, on November 18 last year, the girl had allegedly attempted suicide following which she was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Union Minister Jual Oram said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik should resign on moral grounds. Similarly, Petroleum and Natural gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan targeted the CM for its failure to provide justice to the girl.

“For how long Patnaik will remain insensitive towards the plight of people. The CM must answer,” said Pradhan.

Food Supplies and Cooperation Minister Surya Narayan Patro, however, said that the government is serious about the incident and will take appropriate actions.

Meanwhile, Patnaik expressed deep grief and conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family. Besides, BJD’s Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda also expressed deepest condolences on demise of the survivor.

The BJP and the Congress, on the other hand, have demanded a CBI investigation into the alleged suicide. BJP’s Mahila Morcha has decided to launch a two-day statewide stir from today. Moreover, the BJP workers burnt effigy of CM Naveen in Nimapara. The party workers also attempted to gherao CM Naveen’s residence in Bhubaneswar however they were stopped by police near old Airport Chhak.
