The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in several parts of Odisha over the next 48 hours. A yellow warning has been issued, with surface winds expected to reach 40-50 kmph along the North Odisha coast.
Five individuals died from lightning strikes in Odisha's Bargarh and Balangir districts, with three fatalities under a tree and two in a paddy field. The Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the victims' families and ensured free treatment for the injured.
The cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal adjoining Coastal Andhra Pradesh has become less marked, said IMD.
The IMD issued a 'yellow warning' for several districts in Odisha, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds up to 40 kmph, alongside heavy rainfall. This alert follows recent rains that relieved hot conditions in areas including Bhubaneswar.
Odisha faces delayed monsoon onset, causing prolonged hot and humid weather. The IMD forecasts potential advancement of the southwest monsoon and predicts thunderstorms and significant rainfall across various districts in the coming days.
The coastal districts will also experience hot and humid conditions. However, there is a possibility of increase in the rainfall activities from June 17, informed IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre director Manorama Mohanty.
There would be a gradual rise in maximum temperature (day temperature) by 2 to 3 degrees C during the next 3 days and no large change is expected thereafter at many places over the districts of Odisha.

As per the IMD, the thunderstorm activities are likely to continue in Odisha for the next few days.
