Depression to trigger heavy to heavy rainfall in Odisha; IMD issues orange warning

A depression over the Bay of Bengal is set to cause heavy rainfall in Odisha. IMD has issued an orange warning for several districts, predicting thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Thunderstorm alert for Odisha districts

The well-marked low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast persists over the same region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday informed that it is likely to move slowly northwards and concentrate into a depression over the north Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours.

As per IMD, several parts of Odisha are likely to experience thunderstorm activities in the coming days under its influence.

Moreover, an orange warning has also been issued for thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rainfall in some districts of the state.

Day 1 (Valid upto 0830 hrs IST of 29.05.2025)

Orange Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Balasore, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, and Jajpur.

Day 2 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 29.05.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 30.05.2025)

Orange Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Kendrapara.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.

Day 3 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 30.05.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 31.05.2025)

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph and heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sudargarh, Deogarh, Balangir, Boudh, Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Ganjam and Gajapati.
