Named after the headquarter town of Balangir, this district was formed on 1st November 1949. It is flanked in the northwest by the Gandhamardan hill. Many hill streams traverse it. The name Balangir is said to have been derived from Balaramgarh, a fort built here in the 16th Century by Balram Deo, the 19th Raja of Balangir and founder of Sambalpur kingdom. The Balangir District is surrounded by Subarnapur district in east, Nuapada District in the west, Kalahandi District in the south and Bargarh District in the north.
Raising fears that Mamita might be having evidence about the sex racket at Sunshine English Medium School and the involvement of BJD Ministers in it, Saluja said, “Why did the Minister call them to his Raipur flat. Police have recovered Mamita’s pen drive and laptop. Police should provide the details of the data they have retrieved from the victim’s laptop hard disk".
BJP’s Bargarh district unit on Monday observed an eight-hour bandh in the region to mount further pressure on the government to oust MoS (Home) Dibya Shankar Mishra in the wake of his alleged complicity in the case.
Senior leader and Congress legislative party leader Narasingha Mishra who accompanied the central team said, “Her (Mamita) mother clearly told me to fight for her daughter. As announced earlier, If I get any such request, I will wear black coat again to fight for justice to the girl.”
The BJP has been targeting the Minister for his alleged proximity to Gobinda Sahu, the prime accused in the murder of Mamita, a teacher at Sunshine English Medium School in Kalahandi’s Mahaling.
Meanwhile, the brother of the deceased girl alleged, “We doubt this is a murder as why one will cut her nerves and then seal the wound with black cello tape and then hang herself. She has cuts on her fingers.”
Sameer Mohanty, the President of State BJP, on Tuesday said that there are hundreds of Gobinda Sahus roaming on the streets. The time is ripe to crush them before they could do any harm to another Mamita.
Earlier on Wednesday, Bolangir Police had produced Sahu before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court in Bangomunda which allowed the cops to take Sahu on remand for five days.
Demanding the removal of the two ministers- Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra and State Law Minister Pratap Jena—the NCPCR Chairperson said, “If we feel, there are anomalies in the report submitted by the State Government, we will definitely send a team. However, the CM should think and remove the ministers so that a fair probe can be ensured in the case,” She stated.
“We want justice and arrest of all the accused involved in the case. Death penalty should be awarded to the Gobinda Sahu," said Mamita’s father after meeting OSCW Chairperson Minati Behera.
Minati Behera, the Chairperson of Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) on Saturday visited the home of Mamita Meher, the murdered lady teacher of Sunshine English Medium School, at Jharni under Bolangir’s Tureikela Police limits.
Rana claimed that he didn't sell his wife rather he had mortgaged her for Rs 60,000. He said that he needed the money as he has some heart problems and needed surgery. He further said that he had been in touch with his wife over the phone.
Even though the exact reasons what triggered the collapse of the temple roof is unknown, it is believed that the old structure which was already in a dilapidated condition might have collapsed accidentally.
The effects of the tempest are discernible on the streets across the State today.
Meanwhile, if the recovered mobile phone from Radhe's house is found to be of Mamita, which Gobinda claimed to have buried in the pit with her body, it could be a vital input and help the police investigation.
Post her death, as per the pre-plan, Sahu took Mamita’s dead body to the under-construction Mahaling Stadium near the school premises, where the pit was made ready by his associate Radhe, the JCB driver and the clerk, and asked the clerk to spread a layer of cardboards in the pit as water had accumulated.
