Odisha police has arrested a man for allegedly selling his wife for Rs 1 lakh in Rajasthan. The accused has been identified as Rajesh Rana of Sulekela village under Belpada police station in Bolangir district.

As per reports, Rana had married the woman around three months ago. They used to work at a brick kiln in Raipur. However, a few days ago, he took his wife to Rajasthan and allegedly sold her for Rs 1 lakh.

The matter came to light after the family members of the girl, who were told by Rana that their daughter eloped with someone, lodged a complaint at Belpada police station suspecting some foul play.

Acting on the complaint, the cops carried out an investigation and soon rescued the woman from Rajasthan, arrested the accused, and forwarded him to court.

"He took me to Rajasthan to work at a brick kiln but he sold me there for Rs 1 lakh. Since then, I was working there as domestic help," alleged the woman.

The father of the woman said, "I don't know at what amount he had sold my daughter. He had told me over phone that my daughter eloped with someone. But it was something hard to digest for us and hence, we approached the police here."

However, Rana claimed that he didn't sell his wife rather he had mortgaged her for Rs 60,000. He said that he needed the money as he has some heart problems and needed surgery. He further said that he had been in touch with his wife over the phone.

Police comment could not be obtained on the matter.
