Dhenkanal: Tension ran high in Mahulapala area in Kamakhyanagar area in the district after locals took to the streets and staged a road blockade on the Dhenkanal-Kamakhyanagar main road on Saturday protesting against the government’s failure in providing drinking water in the area.
Hundreds of women from the village blocked the main road by placing buckets and water containers demanding quick provision of drinking water in the village.
Following the incident, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Kamakhyanagar, Officer-in-charge of local police station and Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) rushed to the spot and discussed with locals. After a long discussion with the officials, the villagers withdrew their strike.
“We have to walk for five to seven kilometers to get drinking water. We demand that the government should provide drinking water immediately,” said an agitating villager.
“We are not getting water for us and our cattle in this scorching summer. We were forced to stage a road blockade to get the attention of the government to our plight,” said another agitating villager.
