Social media misuse: Odisha Crime Branch gets 98 complaints; 336 posts removed

Odisha Crime Branch is addressing the misuse of social media and deepfakes, particularly during the election period. They received 98 complaints, leading to legal actions including arrests and notices. Furthermore, 336 problematic posts were removed.

Amid allegations that social media and deepfakes are being misused for maligning leaders and spreading misinformation on social media, Odisha Crime Branch is taking action to contain such menace during the ongoing elections. 

Crime Branch IG Shefeen Ahamed K informed that the Cyber cell of the Crime Branch is very active now during election time. 

“The Crime Branch has received 98 complaints about social media misuse, and deepfakes. Cases were registered on five complaints and a person was arrested. Besides a person has been put on notice,” he added.

Moreover, 600 posters have been identified on social media and social media intermediaries have been told to remove them, the IG said.

He also informed that about 336 posts have been removed.

“We request people to use social media staying within the legal limits,” he advised.
