Moreover, the accused were arrested after a mobile phone was seized from an inmate. Around 266 grams of brown sugar, one SUV, and several mobile phones have been seized from the six accused.
Puri SP Pinak Mishra said, “We will investigate their forward and backward linkage -- who others are involved in it and from where the two were procuring the banned substance. Their distribution network is under scanner. The two will be thoroughly interrogated.”
Sources said the accused were allegedly involved in smuggling in the guise of fish trade. They were targeting to sell the drugs to various clubs and pubs ahead of the New Year.
Police got a tip-off that a youth of Jhadeswarpur was smuggling the banned substance from West Bengal to Jaleswar. Police raided and seized 300 gms of brown sugar, two cell phones, a bike, and cash worth Rs 6,000 from the youth.
The arrested brown sugar peddlers have been identified as residents of the Delang area in Puri.

According to source, a team of Odisha STF and Assam police arrested the drug peddler. Earlier in December, 1.335 kg of brown sugar, a car and other incriminating materials were seized from his possession.
According to sources, three persons of a family from Ramachandi village and one from Ranapur area in Nayagarh district have been arrested for smuggling the brown sugar.
Following a tip off, the police had put up a barricade at Keshura and nabbed the peddlers once they tried to cross it.
The drugs peddler, identified as Hara Prasad Prusty, was arrested from Narayani Pitha near Kantilo under Fategarh Police Station on Sunday evening. Brown sugar weighing 1 Kg 190 gram was seized from his possession.
