The Excise Department carried out a successful crackdown on illegal drug trafficking on Sunday in Odisha’s Jajpur district, arresting three persons while they were allegedly selling brown sugar. Officials seized 52 grams of the narcotic substance during the operation.

According to sources, the raid was conducted near Ballabhi Ghat under Jajpur Town police limits. The accused were seated on a motorcycle and engaged in the sale of brown sugar when excise officials swooped in and caught them red-handed.
The seized contraband is estimated to be worth around Rs 5.20 lakh in the illegal market. Following the seizure, the Excise Department arrested all three individuals and forwarded them to court for judicial proceedings.
Officials said the operation is part of an intensified drive against drug trafficking in the district. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the narcotics and to identify possible links in the illegal supply network.
However, no comments were received from the Excise Department team in this regard.
Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident yesterday and in a major crackdown on drug trafficking in the State Capital, the Khordha district excise officials busted a brown sugar racket operating in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
As many as three persons, including a law student allegedly involved as the kingpin of the racket, were arrested in connection with the incident.
Excise officials had seized 265 grams of brown sugar from Biju Patnaik International Airport area in Bhubaneswar during a special operation. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth around Rs 27 lakh.
Investigations revealed that the accused were procuring brown sugar from Khordha and supplying it across various parts of Bhubaneswar. The gang had reportedly turned the Forest Park and Airport areas into their regular meeting and distribution hubs.
