Sundergarh: Protesting against Odisha government’s decision on ceiling on freight rate for transportation of minerals, the district truckers’ association called for a 24-hour bandh today.
“We demand that there should be an equal treatment for all truckers to transport minerals for any destination. For that we have called for a peaceful bandh in the district and the people are co-operating with us,” said a trucker.
The district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC in as many as eight sensitive areas of the district including three in Sundergarh town. To avoid any untoward incident it has also deployed 11 platoons of force across the district.
“We have also booked some wrongdoers under Section 107. Stern action will be taken against all the lawbreakers,” Sundergarh SDPO Prasant Mohanty said.
Apprehending law and order situation, police have taken truckers’ body president into preventive detention.
The truckers have been opposing the recent notification of the ceiling on freight rate for transportation of minerals and demanded that the government should reconsider the rates.
Official sources the government’s decision was aimed at putting a ceiling on ore carrying cost to rein in unfair trade practices.
