Famous for its Sambalpuri Saree, the Sambalpur District is the western part of state of Odisha. The economy of Sambalpur District is basically dependent on agriculture and secondly no forests. Forests play an important role in the economy in terms of contribution to revenue, Domestic Product as well as dependence of people for livelihood. In the past Sambalpur has been a great centre of diamond trade. Kendu leaf (Diospyros Melanoxylon) is also produced in Sambalpur. Tendu leaf is one of the most important non–wood forest products of Sambalpur and is also called as green gold of Odisha. Only 15 kms north of Sambalpur, Hirakud Dam, the longest earthen dam of the world stands in its lone majesty across the great river Mahanadi. Maa Samalei is the presiding deity of Sambalpur. Sarsatia, a special kind of sweet dish is very famous and unique one.
In a major achievement, Sambalpur Police arrested 12 members of a dacoit gang following an encounter. In the exchange of fire, one member of the gang sustained bullet injuries.
Interestingly, Rath himself had called a press conference to declare his resignation and disassociation from the conch party. However, he was expelled even before he could resign.

The infant who was stuck in an open borewell at Laripali in the Rengali area of Sambalpur and was later rescued after an eight-hour-long operation on December 12th night is showing signs of improvement at VIMSAR in Burla.
However, she has infections caused by wounds she sustained inside the borewell iron pipe, informed VIMSAR Superintendent Lalmohan Nayak.
Sources said, her intestine is bleeding and the health authorities of the VIMSAR are mulling to airlift her to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics (Sishubhawan) in Cuttack, if the need arises.
