SOA University to work with CMC, Vellore in molecular genetics

Bhubaneswar: The SOA University will collaborate with the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore to conduct research in the field of molecular genetics and molecular biology.

The research lab for the purpose was being set up at the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, run under the SOA University in which researchers from the different departments would participate, University sources said.

This would be a pioneering venture in Odisha as research in this area was yet to be taken up in the state.

Dr Santhosh Sundaresan, a leading researcher from the Molecular Medicine Unit in the Department of Gastroenterology at CMC, Vellore, visited the IMS and Sum Hospital on Friday to see the facilities available and discuss the project.

“It is a new venture which can bring into focus the new areas of medical research,” Dr SS Kar, Director (Research) said adding molecular research could simplify the diagnosis process while low cost tools could be developed to treat patients.

Advanced research is being undertaken in several countries on molecular genetics which can throw light on how various diseases develop and also help in early detection and treatment, he said.

The scope for research at IMS and Sum Hospital was also bigger in view of the large number of patients, belonging to different strata of the society, visiting the hospital for treatment, Dr. Kar said.

Dr Sundaresan interacted with the heads of several departments and presented a talk on “Molecular Genetics of Gastrointestinal Disorders” on the occasion.

Among others, Prof BN Panda, Head of Department of Medicine, Dr NK Debata, Head of the Microbiology department, Dr Manoj Kumar Sahu, Head of department of Gastroenterology and Prof Sanghamitra Nayak, Head of the Centre for Biotechnology under the University, spoke.
