Bhubaneswar/ Rourkela: A team of Airport Authority of India (AAI) on Saturday visited the SAIL-owned airport here to examine the feasibility to turn it into a full-fledged airport.
During the visit, the team led by N Makhija, Jt. General Manager of AAI has recommended to increase the runway to 7,500 metre from the existing 6,000 metre while assessing other feasibility for establishing the airport.
The team, which will submit the final report to the Centre, is reportedly pleased over the existing infrastructure here.
“We have conducted our survey of airstrip. We will submit our report soon and accordingly necessary action will be taken,” said Makhija.
After the team submits their report to AAI and upon its approval, an MoU will be signed between AAI and RSP following which the modification work of the airstrip will start and commercial flight service will begin.
A team of representative from the Rourkela Chambers of Commerce and Industry was also present during the visit.
“ As the largest steel plant of SAIL and a number of leading educational institutions such as NIT, BPUT are here, there is a need of full-fledged airport. We had informed prime minister Narendra Modi to set up an airstrip here”, said Rourkela MLA Dilip Ray.
The AAI team today expanded the existing runway to 7,500 ft so that it will accommodate airbus in future, Ray hoped.
