It’s mid April and Odisha has already started to boil. Intense heat wave has swept across parts of Odisha with mercury remaining above 40 degree Celsius in as many as 15 places of the state on Saturday.
The regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar informed that mercury surged above 40 degree Celsius mark at 16 places in the State today.
As the heat wave continues to sweep across Odisha with the mercury soaring above 40 degrees in some places, the khus khus farmers and curtain makers make a hay from their business.
The weather agency has also advised people to take precautionary measures for hot weather while going outside during midday time (around 1200 IST-1500 IST in these areas).
According to the official, in the past five years, the hill state whose economy largely depends on horticulture, agriculture and hydropower, received the lowest precipitation during the past 14 summer months.
A Yellow warning for heat wave has been issued for several districts of the State till April 2, 2022.
As per the notification issued by the department, the timings have been revised to mitigate effects of the heat wave situation on students during summer season.
As per the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, Titilagarh recorded a temperature of 41.4 degree Celsius, the highest in the State, followed by Bolangir at 41.3 degrees.
As heat wave continues to sweep across Odisha, particularly the western part of the State, four towns recorded maximum temperature of 40 degree Celsius or more on Monday.
However, heat wave conditions are very likely to continue to prevail in isolated pockets over west Rajasthan on Sunday, Vidarbha on Sunday and Monday and west Madhya Pradesh till March 22.
Meteorologists said that the movement of system over the Bay of Bengal may take the temperature soaring in Tamil Nadu. The IMD also predicted that without strong winds flowing from any direction, the temperature during the day will increase.
According to the met officer, Angul emerged hottest with the mercury reaching up to a maximum of 39.7 degree Celsius followed by Sonepur (39.5), Baripada (39.2) and Boudh (39).
As the sun marches northwards and according to the climatology, the month of March is when the region extending from Maharashtra to Odisha is a heat zone.
As per IMD, the maximum temperature is likely to rise around 3 to 4 degrees during the next two to three days. As per the forecast, the maximum temperature will be above 3 to 5 degrees at one or two places in the State during March 16 to 18.
The State Project Director of Odisha School Education Programme Authority urged the concerned officials to take all precautionary measures to tackle the ensuing heat wave conditions at school level.
