In 1st April, 1993 Kendrapara District was created form the mother District Cuttack. The District covers an area of 2, 644 sq km. It has the second largest mangrove ecosystem in the country and home to saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) the largest Indian Lizard at Bhitarkanika National Park. It the Batighar, the first lighthouse installed in eastern coast of India. Rasabali is the famous delicious dessert of kendrapada district.

“Mere recalling of the most horrific moment of my life makes my hair stand on end. It was Monday (May 30). I along with ten of my friends was enjoying a bath in Kani river. Like any other day, we were bathing in circle near the bank. Suddenly, I felt someone was pulling my right leg," recounted Om.

As per reports, Om Prakash was bathing with his friends in Kani river near his village when a giant 10-ft long salt water crocodile pulled him into the river. However, the 14-year-old lad did not give up and fought off the reptile to emerge victorious after a 10 minute battle in the river.
