Well-off people are often heard fraudulently taking benefits under the Public Distribution System (PDS) across the country. Of late, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Simulia in Odisha's Balasore district has courted a similar controversy after his parents were accused of getting benefits of ration cards.

As per the allegations, the BDO Abhishek Das’ parents who reside at Matha Sahi of Sahira Panchayat under Aul block in Kendrapara district have been receiving food grains for the last three years. They have been obtaining rice from dealer of a neighbouring village so that residents of his locality would not come to know about it.

Meanwhile, locals have raised objections after the matter surfaced and demanded an investigation into the matter.

Complainant Saroj said, “Anil Kumar Das and his wife Hemalata Das of Mathasahi have been receiving rations from dealer of a neighbouring village for the last three years. Their son is an OAS officer and is earning more than Rs 70,000 per month. He is in charge of two blocks. It is shameful that despite being parents of a block development officer, they don’t feel bad of doing it.”

On the other hand, Aul BDO said, “We have not received any such allegation so far. As you have brought the matter to us, we will definitely take action against the guilty after investigation.”

Coming to the rescue of his parents, Simulia BDO Abhishek said, “I joined Odisha administrative services in 2019. My parents had been issued ration cards much before my service. During my training period in administrative service, I had intimated them to submit the ration cards. They should have returned the ration cards to the administration.”
