In the latest epidemiological update on Friday, the UN health body reported over 850,000 new cases worldwide in the 28-day period from November 20 to December 17.
The death toll was recorded at 5,33,332 with four new deaths -- two from Kerala, one each in Rajasthan and Karnataka -- reported in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am stated.
India recorded 640 fresh Covid-19 infections in 24 hours taking the number of active cases to 2,997 from 2,669 the day before, according to the Union Health Ministry data on Friday.
A man, suspected to be affected with Cholera, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital, taking the death toll as per the unofficial sources to 15 on Friday.
As per reports, as many as 13 people have died in Rourkela due to the recent Cholera outbreak with more than 1400 infected with the dreaded disease. Three patients have died at the Rourkela Government Hospital, three at other hospitals and one patient at his home.
WHO's decision was prompted by the variant's ability to spread fast among the community. It said the decision was due to the strain's 'rapidly increasing spread'.
The source said that 19 cases of the new coronavirus variant has been reported from Goa while one each from Maharashtra and Kerala.
Till now, the variant has killed one person in Kerala while taking India’s active COVID-19 cases to 1828.
Speaking to reporters, Mishra said, “Sufficient amount of halogen tablets and ORS pouches are being supplied to the affected areas. I along with the Health Secretary will visit Rourkela today to take stock of the situation there.”
