Pistachios are mostly commonly used in sweets and drinks to enhance the flavor and texture of a dish. They are also eaten in salted and roasted form and are immensely beneficial for health. Be it chocolates, brownies, ice creams, or candies, young and old alike love to sprinkle powdered pistachios on their favourite sweets. So eating pistachios is good for all right? No, wrong!

Eating pistachios in small amounts can be good for health but for some people especially those who are suffering from high blood pressure and kidney problems, it can prove to be problematic.

Pistachios are high in potassium

Kidneys are the filtration system of the body as they remove toxic waste from the blood. If you have kidney problems or high blood pressure it can put a strain on the kidneys and further increase your risk of getting kidney disease. Eating food high in potassium can cause chronic kidney disease. Since pistachios are high in potassium they should be eaten in moderation if you have kidney issues.

The high content of potassium in pistachios can harm the kidneys and lead to several other health problems like irregular heartbeat, slow pulse, weakness, and nausea. Eating nuts in high amounts in general can cause weight gain and hence you should never eat them in excess.

When you gain weight due to eating pistachios in excess it can again put stress on the functioning of kidneys. Importantly it is the job of kidneys to remove excess potassium from your blood. So when their functioning is affected they cannot remove potassium from your system as effectively

Excess salt leads to high blood pressure

If you are a high blood pressure patient then it is a must that you should eat foods low in sodium. But usually, pistachios are eaten in roasted form which is salted. This introduces a good amount of excess sodium in your body which can contribute towards a spike in your blood pressure levels.
