Every year, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways organises the National Road Safety Week in India from January 11 to January 17, to create an awareness about the road safety practices.

The vehicle of sub-collector Bijayananda Sethi was coming from the Bolangir side while the victims on the motorcycle were coming from the Patanagarh side. The van and the bike collided head-on near Sarmuhani. The two on the motorcycle were thrown off under the impact and suffered critical injuries. The bike was damaged.

A person was killed and five others were injured after the auto-rickshaw they were travelling in had a head-on collision with a tractor at Giripali Chhak under Sasan Police limits in Sambalpur district on Tuesday. 

As many as 21 school students were injured, among whom three sustained critical injuries, after the pickup van they were travelling in overturned at Champa Ghati in Gajapati district’s Mohana area on Monday.

In yet another road mishap in Sonepur, at least seven students sustained grievous injuries after a picnic bus ferrying them hit a truck from rear near Khambasiripali.

According to sources, the tourists from West Bengal had come for vacation to Daringbadi by two buses. After touring Daringbadi, they were en route to Gopalpur via Brahmanigaon when the incident occurred.

The mishap occurred near Chudamani temple when the truck suffered a flat tyre.

At a time when the increasing road mishaps have become a cause of concern for the Odisha government as well as road safety activists, the transport department’s move assumes importance.
