Ravenshaw varsity closed sine die following post-poll violence
Cuttack: Tension ran high on premises of Ravenshaw University on Wednesday evening following clashes between two rival groups over students’ union election results. Soon after the unrest the university was closed Sine Die by the Ravenshaw authorities.
According to sources, normalcy in the university took a violent turn on last evening when the winning candidates took out a rally and had a faceoff with the opposition candidates.
The fight also spilled over to the College Square thoroughfare. Several students were injured and motorcycles were broken during the clash, the sources added.
Following the incident DCP Sanjeev Arora and MLA Prabhat Bishwal rushed to the campus to pacify the irate students but the fights continued unabated. Eight platoons of forces have been deployed at the university to avoid any untoward incident.
Finding no sign of easing of tension on the campus, the university authorities declared sine die and asked the male and female students to vacate the hostels by 5 am and 10 am respectively on Thursday.
Besides, the university authorities postponed the oath taking ceremony of elected students’ representative for an indefinite period.
It is worth mentioning that Ramyaranjan Behera was elected as the president of the University while Sankalp Patnaik became the general secretary.
