Crop loss, debt burden forces five more farmers to end life

Jagatsinghpur/Nuapda/Kendrapara/Cuttack: The frequency in the suicide of farmers in Odisha has taken serious proportions with five such incidents in the state on Thursday.

Reports from Jagatsinghpur district said Rabindra Muduli, a farmer of Bariamula village under Balikuda police limits died at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack five days after consuming poison due to crop loss and debt burden.

This is the first case of farmer suicide reported from Jagatsinghpur district.

In another incident, Laxman Gouda, a farmer of Thakurpalli village under Komna block in Nuapada district committed suicide by hanging himself from the tree. Family sources said the deceased took the extreme step after sustaining huge crop loss this year.

Incidentally, the incident took place during the visit of Agriculture minister Pradip Maharathi to the district on Thursday.

Besides, in Kendrapada district, Rabindra Mahali, a farmer of Mahakalapada block and Bhagaban Sahu of Agrahata village under Choudwar police limits in Cuttack districts died at the SCB Medical College and Hospital while undergoing treatment after consuming pesticides due to crop loss and loan burden, the reports added.

A farmer identified as Chandan Kaudia of Ektaguda village under Dangrapaunshi in Kundra block in Koraput district ended his life allegedly due to crop failure.
