It was a princely state in British India and in post independence period it merged with Odisha state as Kalahandi district. Kalahandi is an example of disparity/contrasts that exist in many parts of the developing/underdeveloped world. On the one side, this district is famous for famine and starvation deaths and on the other side it is rich with agriculture. Kalahandi is largely an agriculture based economy. During Bengal famine Kalahandi alone had sent 100,000 tons of rice. Located on the confluence of the rivers Uttei and Tel, Kalahandi is a home to some very ancient temples of extensive architectural excellence dating back to the 12th century.

As per IMD’s Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar, the southwest monsoon has entered through South Odisha today. While it has fully covered the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur, it has partially touched parts of Nuapada, Kalahandi and Rayagada districts.
