The path for Kalahandi Medical College and Hospital to start functioning from this academic year (2023-24) was cleared on Thursday after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 100 MBBS seats for the health institution.

Informing about the development, the Odisha Health and Family Welfare department tweeted, “Happy to share that National Medical Commission has approved opening of a Govt Medical College at Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi, with admission of 100 MBBS seats from academic session 2023-24.”

The infrastructure required for the medical college has been developed on 36 acres of land at Bhangabari, on the outskirts of Bhawanipatna.

Sources said, while the construction work of academic and administrative blocks, hostels, and staff quarters for the 100-seat medical college is almost over, the construction work of the academic building is underway and is expected to be completed soon.

The Kalahandi Government Medical College and Hospital (MCH) has been set up at an investment of over Rs 200 crore. The beautification work of the medical college and hospital is almost complete, sources said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the NMC had also approved 100 MBBS seats for Keonjhar medical college in August last year. Teaching in the health institution, which is under Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University (MSCBD) University, Baripada, will begin this academic year as well.
