Tribal death: MLA demands 20L compensation

Sundergarh: Biramitrapur MLA George Tirkey on Friday demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation for the kin of the deceased tribal youth who was allegedly beaten to death by cops in November last year.

Tirkey who held a meeting with local tribals in this regard said that since the cops are involved in the case and deliberately wanted to suppress the matter, the family members of the youth must be compensated.

“It is known to everybody that Jagmohan Badaik died as Pragyan Pritam Jena, the OIC of Hatibari PS in the district tortured him physically on 8 November in connection with a false case. The injured youth was admitted to the Burla hospital immediately where he breathed his last on 11 November. From this it is clear that the youth succumbed to the injuries inflicted by the OIC”, the independent legislator stated.

He too demanded stern action against the persons involved in the crime.

“Why no action has been taken yet in this regard by the State government? The kin of the family must be compensated with Rs 20 lakh”, he noted.

The locals have also demanded an impartial probe into the matter.

In a related development it is learnt that Jena has been transferred to the district police headquarters.
