Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday urged the Centre for setting up a Defence Industry Corridor and Aeronautical University in Odisha.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Patnaik stated that Odisha is committed towards national vision of achieving self-relaince in defence and aerospace design and production.

At present, Odisha is the largest producer of steel and aluminum in the country and availability of defence and aerospace grade products from several major plants including Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Tata Steel, Hindalco Industries Limited and National Aluminum Company Limited makes it a perfect location for the key institutions.

Besides, Odisha is almost in the advance stage of promulgating a dedicated defence and aerospace manufacturing policy to promote cluster based development of the industry.

The state also has an added advantage in the form of a testing and research ecosystem of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Aero Engine facility in Koraput, Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Balasore and Ordnance Factory at Bolangir.

Over 1 lakh acres of industrial land bank and industrial regions to support downstream industries, large pool of manpower and presence of national institutes of higher learning such as IIT, NIT, IIM, IIIT, XIMB and NISER are all added advantages.

“The proposed Aeronautic University to be set up in collaboration with HAL could be considered and the State government will provide unmatched facilitation support for successful establishment of both the Defence Industry Corridor and Aeronautical University,” Patnaik wrote in his letter.
