Maoists protest road work, set vehicles ablaze

Koraput: Opposing road construction work in the district, Maoists have torched vehicles in Majhigumandi and Uparagumandi villages under Narayanpatna block late on Thursday night.

Locals said, as many as four construction vehicles including two JCB machines and two tractors have been burnt. The vehicles belong to SPR Construction Company, which had won tender for the road work in the region, they added.

Some posters put up at the site read that the right wing extremists opposed road work in the area. They too have warned the villagers not to cooperate the contractor in the work.

On being informed, police have reached the spot and began investigation.

In March this year, the red rebels had torched a road construction machine and a two-wheeler at Borapadar village under Bijepur police limits in Kalahandi district.
