Crop loss, loan burden force Dhenkanal farmer to end life

Dhenkanal: There seems to no end to the farmer suicides in the state. A share cropper of Ostapala village under Odapada block in the district ended his life on Tuesday due to alleged crop loss and loan burden.

The deceased has been identified as Sadananda Sahu.

According to sources, Sahu was under severe mental stress on account of massive crop loss. Finding no other means to repay his loans, Sahu took the extreme step and consumed pesticides, the sources added.

Sujata Sahu, wife of Sadananda said, “We have grown crops but all the crops got damaged. He was under severe mental stress as he had taken Rs 2 lakh loan from local money lenders. Finding no other option to repay the loans he committed suicide by consuming pesticides.”

Meanwhile, the locals of the Ostapala village staged a road blockade on Ostapala road by placing the dead body of the farmer on the road.

Besides, the agitating villagers demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the family members of the deceased. The villagers withdrew their strike after district collector and Sadar police rushed to the spot and assured them of assistance.

Lopamudra Mohantry, Odapada Tehsildar said, “Enquiry will be conducted as per the procedure. As their financial condition is not good Red Cross has provided them Rs 10,000 exgratia.”
