Dhenkanal: A day after a raped minor girl committed suicide by setting herself on fire fearing public humiliation, her family members, along with the women activists of Congress, staged road blockade at Baji Chowk square here in the heart of the town demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
They also demanded a government job for a member of the family while district women’s wing of Congress party held the State government directly responsible for such an unfortunate incident.
“Cases of sexual harassments are reported every other day. This government has completely failed to provide security to the women”, district Mahila Congress president Anupam Kar said.
The victim’s mother demanded death penalty for the accused and adequate compensation. “He (the accused) should be hanged till death. Otherwise the innocent minor girls would be repeatedly victim of such barbaric act”, she said.
“Why other girls moving on the road would not be raped by such criminals when my daughter faced same situation at my home?”, she asked.
Police personnel requested them to clear the road. However, the protesters refused to withdraw the blockade until they receive an assurance from the government.
On the other hand, post-mortem of the deceased girl is yet to be held even as the body reached the district headquarters hospital yesterday.
The 17-year-old girl allegedly took the extreme step by setting herself ablaze on Sunday morning at Bhagbanpur village under Dhenkanal Town Police Station.
Family members of the deceased said fearing public ignominy, the minor girl, who was raped on Saturday night, set herself on fire after pouring kerosene on her body.
A youth, who is a neighbour of the girl, raped her on Saturday night when the girl was out of her home in the night for a wash.
