‘Improvement of rural economy’ in Cong’s poll manifesto

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the three-tier panchayat polls in Odisha, the Congress party here on Friday released the party’s poll manifesto focussing to improve the rural economy of the State. The other sectors which have been featured in the list include social security, development of villages, empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions, agriculture and development of SC/ST.

Addressing media Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) chief Prasad Harichandan said, “Since Congress was not in power for last 16 years, we won’t be able to promise huge changes in the current system. But we want to tell the people of Odisha that unless the villages are developed and rural youths are financially secured, we can’t expect our country to grow.”

“We will fight for the rights of people. Like the existing women self help groups (SHGs), there should be youth self help groups to economically uplift them. We will give them seed money, revolving fund and subsidised loan and help improve the rural economy,” Harichandan stated.

He rued that though the Panchayati Raj system was introduced by late Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi to empower the Panchayati Raj Institutions, the power is still with the ruling government.
