A day after the forest department caught a leopard which triggered panic by remaining atop a house at Kodapali under Dharam Bandha section on Saturday night, another leopard was sighted moving in the same area on Sunday.

As per Khariar Division DFO, the health of the leopard has deteriorated and it will soon be treated by a veterinary team.

A leopard, which is believed to have killed two persons and mauled another, was spotted atop a building at Kodapali of Dharma Bandha area under the Sadar range of Nuapada this evening.

Odisha Forest and Environment Minister Pradip Kumar Amat, chairing a conference of the DFOs, has directed the officials to work proactively and take measures to prevent man-animal conflicts in various forested pockets. 

The Forest Department officials reached the village. On searching the area, the body of the victim was recovered from the nearby forest. 

The district education officer (DEO) has suspended headmaster Rajendra Joshi and assistant teachers Kishore Sahu, Hingula Majhi and Lochan Behera for dereliction of duty. 

The fear of tiger has been gripping the people of the villages near the sanctuary for a week now. But the forest department officials are allegedly not taking any measures to do away with the tiger fear. 

On being informed about the incident, the forest department officials rushed to the spot and confirmed the death due to a tiger attack after examining the paw marks and circumstantial evidence.

Nuapada Sadar Tehsildar was suspended by the RDC in connection with the tragic incident.

Padmini is famous in the area as the protector of the forest. Local people lovingly call her Jungle Rani or Forest Queen.

The incident has unleashed terror in the minds of villagers and others in the area.

The OAS officer has been identified as Narayan Sahoo, who has been serving as the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Khariar in Nuapada district.
