Preparation for Sulia Yatra on; priest opposes animal sacrifice
Balangir: With the Supreme Court ruling out of any outside intervention in animal sacrifice practice that has been going on as per traditions and religious beliefs, tribals in the district are thrilled to celebrate Sulia Yatra on Tuesday.
Preparatory meetings were held at Khairaguda which was attended by local MLA and Leader of Opposition Narasigha Mishra and members of Milita Sulia Yatra Committee. A demand was made in the meeting to withdraw cases against the tribals which were lodged for defying the Odisha High Court order earlier that put restrictions on animal sacrifice.
In a related development, chief priest of Sulia Yatra Biranchi Kunwara requested the district administration to take steps so that the animal sacrifice during the festival could be stopped.
Meanwhile, the Milita Sulia Yatra Committee met the Balangir Collector M. Muthukumar and demanded for allowing them to practice animal sacrifice during the festival.
