BJP seeks Governor’s intervention in ration card mess

Bhubaneswar: The uproar over irregularities in ration card districbution in the state got shriller on Saturday with both the Congress and BJP tsking the ruling BJD by the horns. Accusing the State government of failure in implementation of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) in Odisha, the saffron party sought the intervention of the Governor on the issue while the Congress demanded the scalp of Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare minister Sanjay Dasburma.

Besides, over a dozen demonstrations were staged across the State to protest the ‘faulty beneficiary list.’

After a delegation of party leaders led by state unit president KV Singhdeo submitted a memorandum to Governor SC Jamir on the issue, senior BJP leader Bijoy Mohapatra said that the State government had violated NFSA rules while preparing the list of beneficiaries.

“Nowhere in the country will you see such gross irregularities. The ruling BJD has prepared the beneficiary list only to include names of its sympathisers,” Mohapatra said.

“I am not making a false comment on it. This is evident after revelations about the names of Mayors, MLAs, councillors and many elected representatives figuring in the list. Does the party have any answer to it?” asked he.

Mounting a scathing attack on chief minister Naveen Patnaik, he said the Sections under the Food Security Act, which mandate the formation of Food Commission, have not been followed.

“Before implementing the Act, complete attention has not been given to what it is required at the State level. Had the chief minister bothered to go through it, he would have ordered the setting up of a Food Commission, which is mentioned in the Act. Besides, the nonchalant approach of the State government in implementing the Act is evident since Vigilance Committees has not been formed for its effective implementaion,” Mohapatra stated.

Meanwhile, Congress which has been protesting on the issue ever since it came to fore, today sought the resignation of Dasburma.

“Since all the mess has been created under the nose of the Food Supplies department, the minister must resign on moral grounds,” senior Congress leader and party’s Cuttack president Mohd Mokim said.

Condemning the State government, Congress members burnt the effigy of Dasburma in Bhubaneswar.

A mass rally was also taken out by BJP at Baliguda in Kandhamal district protesting MLA Rajiv Patra’s name in the NFSA list.

Ruling BJD has rejected the allegations.

“We are in the process of correcting in list. The opposition parties should not politicise the issue,” BJD spokesperson Sashibhusan Behera said.
