Sewerage work in Bhubaneswar to be completed by 2021

Bhubaneswar: Sewerage work in the Capital city of the State is mired with corruption. Though the deadline for the Rs 754-crore project was 2012, a new date has been fixed for the completion of work in 2021.

As per the data available with the OTV, out of 312 km drain work, 169 km have been completed. Out of 11,401 manholes, work of 6,609 has been done. Similarly, 6,506 chambers of the total 30,707 and 77km house sewerage line of 817 km have been completed.

Only Rs 239 crore has been spent by the contracted company whereas the utlisation certificate has been given for Rs 164 crore.

Meanwhile, due to delay in project work contract of Eastcoast Constructions and Industries has been cancelled.

Urban Development minister Pushpendra Singhdeo said, “Issues are the contracted company has left the work in between. However, the department will fund the restoration and repairing work. For completion of half-finished work a tender will be invited again.”

On the other hand, Subhendu Routray, project officer of Eastcoast Constructions, said, “Even these days the company is ready to work at the rate of 2006. But they (the government) are not ready to hire us. They want to retender the project.”

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Mayor, said, “Road destroyed due to the sewerage project will be repaired with funds from the Urban Development department.”
