Flood situation in north Odisha improves

Bhubaneswar: The flood situation in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts improved on Sunday with both Subarnarekha and Baitarani rivers flowing below their respective danger levels.

Officials said floodwaters have receded in Baliapal and Bhogarai blocks of Balasore district. Baitarani river is flowing below the danger level at Akhuapada and Rajghat, they added.

Reports reaching here said release of floodwater from Galudih barrage in neighbouring Jharkhand has reduced to almost half. While 2.85 lakh cusecs of water per second was released on Saturday, it had come down to 1.27 lakh cusecs of water per second through five sluice gates of the barrage on Sunday.

On Saturday, about 20 villages of Baliapal, Bishnupur, Asti, Madhupura and Jamakunda panchayats of Balasore district were marooned as the floodwaters entered through a breach in the embankment near Rasulpur village.

The plight of the marooned villagers had worsened as there was no supply of medicines and drinking water in the last two days.
