Bariput hill tragedy: Army engineering team begins rescue ops

Bhubaneswar/ Jeypore: A team of army engineers from Ranchi today arrived at the Bariput hills in Koraput to assist the district administration in the ongoing rescue operations to free two labourers trapped under boulders since past seven days.

The team held a closed-door meeting with the District Collector, Superintendent of Police and other stake holders including the local representatives and families of the missing youths. Sources said that the team has suggested the administration to carry out blasting in the area to clear huge boulders and debris on the site.

Meanwhile, an advisory has been issued to vacate humans and animals within 1 km radius of the site.

The district administration had sought the help of the Army after all efforts by ODRAF, Fire Services personnel and NDRF teams to rescue the two trapped men failed.

A team of Odisha Construction Company from Cuttack had also been engaged for the purpose but failed to move the large boulders and debris.

The two labourers —Ghanashyam Guru of Deogarh and Sanjay Dash of Athagarh area in Cuttack district got trapped when the hill suddenly caved in while they were excavating boulders for the ongoing Telengiri Irrigation project.
