Ailing pachyderm dies in Keonjhar

Bhubaneswar: An elephant which was undergoing treatment in Udaygiri forests under Telkoi range of Keonjhar district died on Saturday morning, officials said.

The pachyderm had deep injury in the mouth and the wound was infected with maggots leading to the animal’s death, they added.

“At 11 pm, when we traced the elephant inside the forest, it didn’t allow us to do go close.  After sometime, we were informed by the forest officials that the elephant has fallen down and on inspection we found a punctured wound in its mouth under the right tusk. We put him on saline and medication but it was in vain ,” said Dr Indramani Nath, director, clinical veterinary, OUAT.

“The tissues in the wound had become necrotic. The elephant’s tongue had also become blue. In fact, because of the wound, the elephant could not eat leading to inanition,” he added.

Dr Nath, who led the medical team along with some other officials of Nandankan Zoological park and Wildlife division of Simlipal, to the spot stated that sample of the wound has been sent for medical examination to rule out any bacterial or viral infection.
