As people wrap up 2023 and step into the new year, let's reflect on the incredible advancements in AI over the past 12 months.

Throughout the year, there were noteworthy developments that transformed the landscape of artificial intelligence, making it seem like something out of a sci-fi movie.

January

In January, OpenAI and Microsoft joined forces with a significant $10 billion investment, allowing Microsoft to integrate OpenAI's cutting-edge models, such as GPT-3, into its products and services.

This strategic move aimed to outpace competitors like Google in the ongoing AI competition.

February

In February, Microsoft elevated Bing's capabilities by introducing Bing Chat powered by the latest GPT-4 model.

This propelled Bing's user base to over 100 million, solidifying its position as the second-largest search engine after Google.

March

March marked the unveiling of OpenAI's groundbreaking GPT-4, a model that excelled in handling both text and image inputs.

Its superior performance in tests like LSAT, SAT, and Bar exams set a new benchmark for large language models, representing a significant leap in AI capabilities.

April

April saw the emergence of HeyGen's AI, capable of generating customisable, photorealistic virtual avatars from simple text prompts.

This innovation allowed users to create avatars resembling themselves or entirely new digital personas, showcasing human-like appearance and movements.

June

In June, Midjourney introduced V5, a photorealistic image generator that produced images so realistic they resembled photographs.

V5 set a new standard for AI image realism, surpassing its predecessor.

July

July brought a surprise from Adobe with Firefly, an AI tool generating original images for commercial use without copyright issues.

Though slow to gain traction initially, Firefly marked Adobe's entry into AI image generation.

September

September witnessed the AI revolution in text-to-video capabilities with Runway's Gen-2, enabling users to create videos from scratch with a single sentence.

Gen-2 opened doors to high-quality text-to-video applications.

October

October showcased Anthropic's release of Claude 2, using a 100k token context window to summarise lengthy PDFs better than ChatGPT.

Many users transitioned to Claude 2 after its substantial upgrade.

November

In November, OpenAI enhanced ChatGPT by adding voice and image abilities, unlocking new applications like seeking guidance on fixing a bike through a photo.

December

Finally, as December concludes, Midjourney unveiled V6 of its AI art generator, boasting significant improvements in text generation and sharper 2x upscaled images.

V6 also exhibited superior prompt precision and comprehension, providing users with enhanced artistic control over style and aesthetics.
