The prime accused in the sensational Samiti member Deepak Mahunta murder case was allegedly shot dead by unidentified miscreants at Kamakhyanagar in Dhenkanal district on Wednesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Niranjan Sahu. Police recovered his body which was lying in a pool of blood near the Railway over bridge at Alatuma village under Kamakhyanagar police station in the district this morning. The deceased had multiple bullet injuries.

As per reports, Niranjan was released from jail on bail six months back in connection with the murder case of Baruan Samiti member in 2021.

Though the exact reason behind the death is not known yet, it is suspected that past enmity could have led to the murder.

Family members of the deceased have alleged that Niranjan was killed by some people who were harbouring a grudge against him. As per them, Niranjan was getting regular threat calls from unidentified miscreants for some days.

“As many as four miscreants with the help of others have killed my brother as they were nursing a grudge against him over past enmity,” said the deceased’s brother Sarbeswar Sahu.

Meanwhile, Kamakhyanagar police has registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.
