Malkangiri: Five hardcore maoists, including two women, surrendered before the police in the district today accusing the red rebels of deviating from their ideology and exploiting poor tribals.
The five, allegedly involved in over 50 criminal cases, decided to return to social mainstream as they were disillusioned with the maoists, Malkangiri SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said after the naxals surrendered before him here.
The red rebels, identified as Subha Madkami alias Raju (25), Laka Kabasi (25), Bhime Madhi alias Kumari (25), Soma Madkami alias Bikram (35) and Debe Madkami (30), belong to different villages in Kalimela area in the district, he said.
Out of the five, Bhime and Debe were active women ultras, while the State government has announced Rs one lakh reward each for Subha and Soma, the SP said.
The five decided to lay down arms as they realised that the maoists had deviated from their original ideology and working against the poor and tribal people, he said quoting the surrendered ultras.
They felt that the red rebels were unleashing atrocities on the poor tribals and women and exploiting them in the name of revolution, police said.
