While social workers and parents have welcomed Centre’s move, the Odisha government’s letter opposing the decision has raised many eyebrows.
The district has 3,309 number of child marriage free villages, 280 child marriage free wards under Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and 503 child marriage free Gram Panchayats, said the collector.
The child marriage rate of girls in Odisha is a whopping 20.5 percent, reveals the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5. As per the survey, six districts of the State feature above the national average of child marriage among states.
The Covid-19 pandemic, the ongoing food crisis and the onset of winter have further exacerbated the situation for families, forcing them to make desperate choices, such as putting children to work and marrying girls off at a young age.
Experts say the gradual rise in the cases of child marriage may not necessarily mean that there has been a jump in such instances but that the reporting of such cases has also increased.
