The minor girl was today rescued by Child Welfare Committee (CWC) officials with assistance of local police after the ‘illegal marriage’ came to limelight.

Police have detained Shankar even though he feigned ignorant about the existing marriage laws. Moreover, he has also refuted allegations to have paid money to the girl’s family for the marriage.

Police have detained Shankar while the custody of the minor girl has been handed over to CWC for counsellinBhubaneswar: Despite lot of awareness being created, child marriage continues unabated with similar incidents being reported time and again from several parts of Odisha.

In a latest incident of violation of child rights, a 16-year-old minor was allegedly married off to a 40-year-old widower forcibly by her poverty stricken parents in Bhubaneswar outskirts.

According to reports, the minor was married off to Shankar, a widower at Naput village under Tamando police limits last week.

The accused decided to marry for the second time after the death of his first wife.g while further steps would be taken for her rehabilitation.
