The Election Commission of India has initiated preparations for the 2024 elections in Odisha, but major parties like BJD, BJP, and Congress have not finalized candidates for several assembly seats. While BJD and BJP have partially announced their lists, Congress lags slightly behind.
Hundreds of Satpathy’s supporters on Saturday assembled at his residence in Bhubaneswar and urged the Chief Minister to consider their leader's name.
After Samir Dash was denied a ticket, he made a show of strength by organising a massive rally in Nimapara.
The party has fielded four women candidates among the nine announced today raising questions if the BJD has played the women card in its sixth list. The ruling party is yet to announce candidates for 12 Assembly seats.
A five-time Parliamentarian, Prasanna Patasani was aspiring to contest from the Chilika Assembly constituency.
BJD president Naveen Patnaik has revealed the candidates through a video message.
The fielding of Yasir Nawaz by Congress as Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha candidate and the expulsion of senior Congress leader and Jatani MLA Suresh Routray may turn the BJD’s apple cart in the constituency.
In the 2024 polls, there will be a direct contest with Naveen Patnaik in Odisha, said Amit Shah during an interview with a private news channel on Friday.
BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal alleged, “The 5T was an undemocratic system and it was a political programme. The Election Commission of India has deemed it a political programme and took action. Rs 500 crore was spent for 5T publicity and Rs 50 to Rs 60 crore was spent towards helicopter rides.”
The residents of the constituency never shy away from alleging that the constituency has not developed as it should have been, considering the Chief Minister representing it for such a long period.
Of the total 126 candidates announced by BJD, 28 are women and, 10 of them are the wives of party heavyweights.
BJD MLA Nrushingha Sahu said that tickets are being distributed on the basis of a survey and the party will decide about the rehabilitation of leaders who are denied tickets.
Joining BJD, Varsha has added her name to the long list of actors and actresses joining politics in Odisha.
The BJD is said to be intending to make inroads into the saffron turf and wipe out Congress so that the party would revitalize its weak organisation in Bolangir.
Interestingly, given the number of candidates announced each time, an emerging pattern has caught the attention of many observers. Many believe that the number 9 seems key to the party which seems to be banking on numerology this time.
