As many as 11,059 new Covid-19 cases and 32 fatalities have been reported in Odisha in last 24 hours. The caseload in the State went up to 7,03,441 while Covid related death toll climbed to 2,516.

The deep depression over east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is likely to hit the Odisha-West Bengal coast on May 26 noon. 

The depression over east-central Bay of Bengal, which had intensified into a deep Depression late last night, is very likely to convert into a cyclonic storm by today (May 24).

The developing cyclonic storm 'Yaas' will most-probably make landfall somewhere between Odisha's Paradip and Sagar Islands, the southern-most part of West Bengal. The Director General of India Meteorological Department Mrutyunjay Mohapatra made the major announcement on Sunday.

The structure of Cyclone Yaas is made so that its disastrous impact will be felt in the sea and then on landfall place. Eastern and southern part of Yaas packed with knocking downwind and intense clouds.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today reviewed the preparedness as weather department has predicted a cyclonic storm to hit the coast between Odisha and West Bengal.

Odisha’s Covid caseload jumped to 67,9530 on Saturday with  11,108 new cases having been reported in the last 24 hours.

As per Regional Specialised Metrological Centre, New Delhi, there is convergence among all models that cyclone ‘Yaas’ will take north west course. This is where Odisha comes into picture.

While Indian models predict the date of landfall as May 26, ECMWF, US-GSF, CMC and put the date as May 27-28. The wind speed will be 150kmph gusting to 195kmph.

Two persons including a woman were injured critically in attack by wild animals in separate incidents in Balasore and Dhenkanal district on Wednesday.

Along with the lockdown, the weekend shutdown will be remain in force in the weekends starting from 6 pm of Fridays to 5 am on Mondays in Odisha.

Extending the ongoing lockdown till June 1, 2021, the Odisha government on Tuesday made stricter arrangements both for the public sector and private sector organisations.

Workers belonging to the private  bus association in the district, who are struggling to make ends meet during the lockdown, have demanded financial assistance and provisions from the government for their family as their livelihood is at risk.

With today’s surge, the Covid-19 positive tally in Odisha rose to 6,33,302 while the death toll jumped to 2,357, informed the H&FW Department.
