Bhubaneswar: Odisha's active Covid cases continue to remain above 1 lakh due a steady surge in fresh infections despite a healthy recovery rate. 

The single-day Covid tally in the State rose by 11, 732 numbers in last 24 hours, which pushed the cumulative positive count to 612224 while the total death toll climbed to 2,313 with 19 more fatalities reported during the period.

Khordha district reported maximum four deaths followed by Angul which saw three Covid related fatalities in last 24 hours.

Similarly, 10,781 patients recovered in the State in last 24 hours  taking the total recoveries to 502455.

 Despite a rise in the rate of recovery, the active cases in the State remained above 1 lakh. The State has currently 107403 active cases.

Of the fresh cases reported on May 16, 6,569 people tested positive for the virus from quarantine centres while 5,163 people were found infected from local contacts.

Khordha district comprising the State Capital Bhubaneswar continues to remain as the worst hit region in terms of daily count of cases. 

The district has witnessed the maximum 1710 new cases while Cuttack remained in the second spot with 870 fresh infections. Angul went up to third position reporting 700 new cases.

Sundergarh which continued to remain in the second position for last several days came down to fourth with 641 more people testing positive for the deadly virus in last 24 hours.

Sambalpur which has been witnessing an upward trend in new cases registered 538 fresh infections during the period followed by Balasore with 472 new cases. 

As many as 418 new infections have been detected from Mayurbhanj, while 417 from Nabarangpur, 414 from Bhadrak and 401 from Bolangir district.

Jharsuguda district stood behind Bolangir after registering 391 cases followed by Puri with 390 cases. Jajpur witnessed 383 fresh cases while Jharsuguda witnessed 391 and Bargarh (363), Jagatsinghpur 330.

As many as 277 people were found infected with the virus in Boudh district in last 24 hours while in Ganjam, there were 259 tested positive. Kalahandi recorded 274 new cases while  Keonjhar witnessed 220. As many as 289 cases have been detetcted from Koraput, 261 from Nayagarh, 220 from Nuapada, 245 from Rayagada, 255 from Sonepur and 267 cases from the State pool.

Malkangiri which continued to remain under 100 in single-day covid cases moved to triple digit for the first time during the second wave of the pandemic. The district reported 145 fresh infections during in last one day while only one district which registered below 100 cases is Kandhamal (84).

Rest of the districts saw new cases between 100 and 200 cases.
