Residents displaced by the Lower Indra irrigation project in Nuapada district on Wednesday gheraoed the office of the Collector demanding compensation. The protestors alleged that many families who lost their land due to the project are yet to receive compensation. According to sources, residents of Kalimati, Badochhapar, Dumerbahal, Rajana, Konabira, Kotamal, Boladha and other villages were displaced due to the irrigation project. They alleged that their issues have not been resolved yet despite repeated complaint. While tension prevailed at the protest site, police picked up 15 agitators to thwart any untoward incident.

Excise officials on Wednesday busted a spurious foreign liquor manufacturing unit in Odisha's Ganjam district and a 20-year-old man arrested.
Sources said, acting on a tip-off, an Excise team raided a jungle near Raipalli village in Bhanjanagar block and unearthed the illegal unit.
More than 232 litres of spurious alcohol and manufacturing materials including homeopathic medicines were seized, and a worker was arrested, Ganjam Excise Superintendent Rajendra Bhotra said.
Spurious Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMLF) was being manufactured using homeopathic medicines and different colors. It was being packaged into bottles of different brands of foreign liquor and sold in nearby rural areas at a cheaper rate, he said.
The owner has been identified and he will be arrested soon, the official said.

Bhubaneswar: An ASHA worker was allegedly hacked with sharp weapon by three miscreants in broad daylight on a busy road in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the Unit-6 area of the State Capital city in the afternoon, police said.
According to sources, the ASHA worker came under attack when she tried to save her brother from the miscreants. Further details are awaited.
The injured woman has been shifted to the Capital Hospital for treatment, police said, adding that one of the miscreants has been detained in connection with the dastardly attack. A hunt is on to track down the remaining accused in the case.

Odisha reported 993 new cases of Coronavirus and added 65 more deaths which took the positive tally to 9,97,146 and death toll to 7,086, respectively on Wednesday, informed the State Information and Public Relations Department.
Out of the new positives, 138 persons in the age group between 0 and 18 years were tested positive for Covid-19 in the State in the past 24 hours.
Of the fresh cases reported today, 578 are from quarantine centres, while the rest 415 are local contact cases, added the I&PR Department.
Khordha district reported the highest 419 cases in the last 24 hours while Cuttack remained second in the list with 95 infections, informed the State Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department.

In terms of deaths, Cuttack reported the highest 15 fatalities followed by Jagatsinghpur (11), Kendrapara (9), Dhenkanal (7), angul (5) and Balasore (5).
Bhadrak reported three deaths, Puri two deaths and Ganjam, Keonjhar, Khordha, Koraput and Nayagarh witness one death each.
The State currently has 9,536 active cases while 9,80,471 patients have recovered so far, including 1,064 on Tuesday.
The State has so far tested over 1,71,39,240 samples for Covid-19, including 50,727 in the last 24 hours. Odisha's positivity rate stands at 1.42 per cent.

Bhadrak MLA Sanjib Mallick had a narrow escape after the vehicle he was travelling in was hit by a truck near Jaraka under Dharmasala block of Jajpur district on Wednesday morning.
Mallick along with an associate and a driver was on his way to Bhadrak from Bhubaneswar when the mishap took place today.
As per reports, the truck hit the car from the rear as a result the car rammed into the road divider. Though the vehicle suffered damages in the mishap, the MLA and the others in the vehicle escaped major injuries.
