The Beatles are releasing their last song, which includes the voice of the late John Lennon.

Paul McCartney revealed in an interview that he is using artificial intelligence (AI) to bring back Lennon's voice.

McCartney wants to make the ultimate Beatles record by improving Lennon's vocals and removing background noise, creating a significant piece of music history.

Unveiling the Journey

According to a report from the BBC, in 1994, Yoko Ono gave Paul McCartney a demo tape with the label "For Paul."

This tape contained recordings of songs by John Lennon, who tragically passed away in 1980.

Lennon had made these recordings using a basic boom box while sitting at his piano in his New York apartment, so the sound quality was not very good.

The other members of the Beatles attempted to record the song in the mid-1990s, but George Harrison objected because Lennon's vocals were not perfect and there was persistent background noise.

However, McCartney recognised the potential in Lennon's captivating voice and felt that some improvements were needed.

Harnessing the Power of AI

To address the audio difficulties of the original recordings, McCartney decided to utilise AI technology.

Drawing inspiration from his partnership with Peter Jackson on the Beatles documentary series released in 2021, McCartney employed an

AI program to separate John Lennon's vocals from the undesired background noise.

Through training, the AI system was developed to distinguish between Lennon's voice and the accompanying piano, enabling the team to enhance the overall audio quality.

This innovative approach aims to retain the essence of Lennon's vocals while offering a refined and immersive musical experience, as per the report from BBC Radio 4.

Anticipation

While an exact release date for the final Beatles record has not been revealed, McCartney reassured fans that it would be accessible later this year.

While McCartney embraced the potential of AI, he also admitted to having mixed feelings about the technology.

He acknowledged the possibility of AI-generated tracks being mistaken for authentic recordings, which has raised concerns in the music community.

Nevertheless, McCartney expressed his enthusiasm about the future of music and the creative opportunities presented by AI.

The Future of Music

Dr. Martin Clancy, an AI expert and musician, is excited about this groundbreaking project.

He believes that the fusion of AI and music can open up fresh possibilities for human creativity, as long as it is used wisely.

Dr. Clancy views this endeavour as a chance to showcase how AI can enhance and empower artistic expression instead of simply creating imitations.

He hopes that this project will inspire the music community to embrace the potential of AI and rethink its applications.
