Bhubaneswar: With the government of West Bengal gearing up to acquire Geographical Indication (GI) norm of Rasgola, Odisha government has recently formed a society taking members of Pahala sweets merchants’ association, which will apply for the GI status with the cooperation of State government.
Odisha recently had formed three committees comprising seven members each to look after the issue. The first committee will collect the historical background of the sweet dish while second has been asked to examine the measures taken by the West Bengal government. Similarly, third committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of preparing documents required for the application for GI status.
State Science and Technology department additional secretary Anjana Prusti said the society will apply for GI norms within a month and the government will extend all assistance in this regard. The process for the application will begin after the committees submit their report within 15 days, she said.
