The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai warning of very heavy rains at isolated places with strong winds on Monday as the very severe cyclonic storm Tauktae is likely to pass close from the Mumbai coast towards Gujarat.

A total of 516 people have been evacuated so far, as per the situation report, and 253 people are currently taking shelter in the 10 relief camps that have been opened.

The boat "Ajmeer Sha" which sailed from the shores of Beypore on May 5 is missing and there is no information about any of the fishermen who were in the boat.

Cyclone Tauktae has intensified into a "very severe cyclonic storm" and is approaching the Gujarat coast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

The Severe Cyclonic Storm "Tauktae" (pronounced as Tau'Te) over east central Arabian Sea is likely to intensify further in the next 24 hours.

The Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall for various districts in the State today. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed senior officers to take every possible measure to ensure that people are safely evacuated by the state governments and to ensure maintenance of all essential services.

The Cyclonic Storm 'Tauktae' is intensifying into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and is very likely to further intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Saturday night. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Naliya in the afternoon or evening of May 18. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy falls will be witnessed at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places over Kerala and over Coastal and adjoining Ghat districts of Karnataka on May 15 and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over the same area tomorrow. Heavy to very heavy falls also likely at a few places over south Konkan & Goa and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over north Konkan on the 15th.

As the Cyclone Tauktae whirls towards the Gujarat coast, Maharashtra is preparing to grapple its impact on the coastal Konkan and some interiors which are likely to be affected with heavy rains and gusty winds, officials said here on Saturday.

As many as five NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams from Odisha have left for Gujarat to join the post-cyclone rescue and relief operation as the cyclone ‘Tauktae’ which is strengthening its base further over Arabian Sea is very likely to hit Gujarat coast in the form of very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday.

"This year, the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala is likely to be on 31st May with a model error of plus/minus 4 days."

The coastal districts of Odisha along with few places in Malkangiri, Raygada and Kandhamal districts are likely to witness heavy rainfall today and tomorrow

The fishermen have been advised to touch base at the nearest coast and the department has already coordinated with these coastal belts of various state governments to accommodate the fishermen who reach their shores.

The Meteorological Centre of the IMD here today has issued Orange Warning with forecast for moderate to severe thunderstorms in the Twin Cities. This apart, the forecast has also issued storm and rainfall alert for some other districts of the State.

Norwester that lashed several districts of Odisha in the last couple of days has reportedly damaged crops at several places in Balasore and Sambalpur districts.
