Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami tabling the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the state assembly on Tuesday, has triggered a huge political storm in the country. The opposition parties have raised objections with the Congress expressing strong annoyance over the possible passage of the Bill. Before we delve into the aspect of why the opposition is scared of UCC, let’s find out WHAT IS UCC? A Uniform Civil Code aims for ‘one country one rule’ and it is a set of laws that govern personal matters, including marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession, for all citizens irrespective of their religion. The UCC aims to replace the existing diverse personal laws that vary based on religious affiliations. WHY IS OPPN SCARED OF UCC? The biggest opposition party Congress has been opposing the Uniform Civil Code for a very long time as it believes that the BJP will take credit in the upcoming general elections for the implementation of UCC.
